Kyrgyzstan Public Holidays

CONSTITUTION DAY

Each 5 May is Constitution Day in Kyrgyzstan to mark the day in 1993 that Kyrgyzstan passed its first constitution following breaking away from the USSR.

INDEPENDENCE DAY

Kyrgyzstan celebrates its Independence Day on 31 August to remember the day in 1991 when Kyrgyzstan officially left the USSR.

COMMEMORATION DAY

In the Central Asian Republic of Kyrgyzstan, Day of the Great October Socialist Revolution, or „Social Revolution Day“ for short, had long been a public holiday. But since 2017, this holiday is known as „Days of History and Commemoration of Ancestors“.

HOMELAND DEFENDER’S DAY

In Kyrgyzstan, as in Russia and most other former Soviet Republic, 23 February is a national public holiday. Only, in Kyrgyzstan, the name of the holidays is „Homeland Defender’s Day“ rather than the usual term „Defender of the Fatherland Day“.

NEW YEAR

Kyrgyzstan celebrates New Year with a public holiday every 1 January, as does most of the rest of the world. However, the celebrations really begin on New Year’s Eve and reach a high point with the turning of the clock from 23:59 on 31 December to midnight on 1 January.

LABOR DAY

Labor Day in Kyrgyzstan is celebrate every 1 May, as it is in much of the rest of the world. This is a holiday to celebrate the contributions of workers to the economy and society, and also a time to highlight where progress still needs to be made towards fair and safe working conditions.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

International Women’s Day in Kyrgyzstan is held every 8 March to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It is also a day used to highlight ongoing gender inequality and to call for further change.

NOORUZ

The Nooruz holiday in Kyrgyzstan marks the coming of spring and is celebrated on the day of the Spring Equinox. Usually, this occurs on 21 March, but the date of the holiday can vary slightly from year to year. This holiday is especially connected with the Zoroastrian religion, but almost everyone in the country celebrates it.

VICTORY DAY

Kyrgyzstan celebrates on 9 May – along with Russia and some former Soviet Republics – to commemorate the triumph of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany at the end of World War II .
