Itinerary: Tashkent – Nukus – Ustyurt Plateau – Lake Sudochye – Aral Sea – Muynak – Kungrad – Nukus

Although the tour is not physically challenging, you need to have a lot of energy for the excursion to the sea, as the way is quite long.

How to get to the Aral Sea?

Map of the itinerary

This is a 3-day active adventure tour to the Aral Sea, located on the border of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Only 50 years ago it was a full-flowing salt lake, so huge that it was called the sea. Its waters were full of fishing ships. The life of the region was bustling, the region flourished. Local people still remember those times… But now in the place of the sea there is a desert covered with salt marshes and dry seaweed, fishing villages are abandoned, the backbones of abandoned ships are covered with rust. The tour to the Aral Sea leaves a mixed feeling of incredible beauty of the surreal landscapes of the Aral desert and the Ustyurt Plateau, and the sadness you feel when you see the naked wounds of this land.

Tour program:

Morning transfer to airport for flight Tashkent – Nukus. Start the tour in SUVs. Nukus is a desert oasis surrounded by 4 deserts – Kyzylkum, Karakum, Ustyurt and Aralkum. The Aralkum  is a desert that has appeared since 1960 on the seabed once occupied by the Aral Sea. Drive to Ustyurt Plateau. The Ustyurt plateau is the most mysterious and least explored area in Uzbekistan. Enjoy wonderful view of the rocks in the canyon of the Ustyurt Plateau. Visit the village of Kubla-Ustyurt where families are engaged in camel breeding. Continue to Sudochye Lake where many migratory birds nest. Along the way we will find archaeological traces left by the ancient peoples who lived on this plateau. Visit to the abandoned village of Urga – the first Russian settlement in Khorezm. Lunch (lunch boxes).

Continue to the Aral Sea. Along the road you will see fantastic landscapes with dramatic canyons. Reaching the Aral Sea by evening, accommodation in a yurt camp near the water, admire the colors of the setting sun reflected in the water and the delightful nature of the Aral Sea.

Here the Ustyurt Plateau breaks off to the surrounding plain with steep and hard-to-reach ledges – cliffs of about 150 meters high forming a network of magnificent canyons. All this beauty was formed when the waters of the Aral Sea washed the limestone rocks of the plateau. The plateau falls in cliffs but nevertheless, there are several places where you can move to the sea. And here is the water: turquoise, infinite and similar to a mirage. If you would like to have plunge into the warm sea you will have to walk through several scores of meters of muddy shallow water. The water in Aral is very salty. In fact you can float on it as in the Dead Sea, it is impossible to sink in it. You need to swim very carefully: if water falls into the eyes it becomes very painful.

Dinner prepared at the campfire. Night at the yurt camp.

After breakfast drive towards Muynak town. It used to be a thriving port city with large population. The road on which we go used to be the bottom of the Aral Sea. In the city of Muynak visit the “cemetery of ships” and a small museum, with a collection of paintings depicting the Aral Sea in its former greatness. Lunch in Muynak. Continue to Nukus via Kungrad. Overnight at the hotel of Nukus.

Breakfast at the hotel. Visit the State Art Museum of the Republic of Karakalpakstan named after I.V. Savitsky, which is famous for its huge collection of avant-garde painting. The museum holds the second largest collection of Russian avant-garde art in the world and a display of applied arts of Karakalpakstan. Next is a walk through the city center. After that visit a huge ancient Zoroastrian city of Mizdahkan founded in the 4th century BC, located near the city of pilgrims Hodjeyli. There are many buildings of different periods in Mizdakhan as well, dating from the 9th to 17th centuries – castles, caravanserais, estates, mausoleums…. But of course this is only a small part; the rest is buried under the sands. Transfer to Khiva or Urgench.
