Discover Uzbekistan by bicycle – explore the country with a rich cultural heritage, unique nature and hospitable people.

Route: Tashkent – Bukhara – Urtagurgan – Sarmish – Nurata – Aydarkul – Kizilcha – Josh – Koshrabad – Mitan – Samarkand – Tashkent

Route length: 1420 km, about 250 km of which is bicycle route.

Transport: minibus and bicycle.

Best time for the tour: from middle of April to end of October. Best time – May, June, September, October.

About the tour:

This dynamic tour with 5-7 hour rides and a distance of 250 km on different road surfaces, will take you through mountain chains, isolated oases, deserts and steppes. On the way you will meet friendly local people and find out about customs and traditions of Uzbekistan. Everyone can take part in cycling, but you need to have good physical fitness and experience in long-distance cycling. On average, you will travel no more than 70 km per day. However, the program can be adapted to your physical capabilities and local conditions. Accompanied by a professional guide, you will learn a lot about the history of the legendary cities of the great Silk Road, Bukhara and Samarkand.

A few tips:

  • When going on tour, carefully check the condition of your bike, paying attention primarily to the attachment of wheels, steering and brakes. A bicycle of any type must have both brakes. The bicycle shall be equipped with a pump with a hose, a set of tools and a spare chamber. Your bike should have a trunk and several rubber bands from the shoulder expander to secure your backpack or bag. In the dark, reflectors, a rear red and a front white lamp are mandatory.
  • In all hikes, a “common table” is arranged at the halt, tea is prepared at the stake, and sometimes another hot dish. Campers take with them necessary stock of products at their discretion. Tourists are advised to have a flask with water (tea, juice, etc.), as well as a mug, spoon, bowl, knife. All group equipment necessary for cooking is taken by the leaders of trips.
  • Your clothes should be comfortable, and in cool and windy weather should be windproof. It is advisable to ride in a bicycle helmet. Cyclists in cold weather need to have a ski hat, spare wool socks and gloves. In case of rain you should have a waterproof jacket or coat.
Tour program:

Arrival in Tashkent by international flight. Transfer to hotel, accommodation.

In the morning departure to Bukhara by a high-speed train. Arrival at Kagan railway station. Transfer to Bukhara (15 km). Hotel accommodation, Lunch. Route presentation, bicycle technical check. Dinner. Overnight at the hotel.

City tour with a guide. Bukhara the divine! It is one of the oldest cities of Central Asia the age of which reaches 2,500 years. This city has been a spiritual and commercial center and its importance does not decline over the centuries. “Bukhoroi – Sharif” – “Noble and Sacred Bukhara” – is one of the numerous epithets that this ancient city was awarded. Here you can fully feel the charming atmosphere of the East!

Visit the central part of the city: complex of Poikalon (XII—XVI c), architectural ensemble of “Masjidi Kalon”, “Miri Arab” madrasah and  minaret (46 m). Ulugbek Madrasah (1417) was the earliest of three commissioned by the enlightened Timurid ruler. Abdulaziz Khan Madrasah (1652). Trading Domes including Toki Zargaron, Toki Telpak Furushon and Toki Saraffon. Tim of Abdullakhan (1577) and one of the most elegant trade halls. Overnight at hotel of Bukhara.

Transfer Urtagurgan by bus (70 km). We transfer to bicycles and continue to Sarmish through local villages (70 km). Lunch on the way. Arrival in Sarmish where you will see rock drawings of the Bronze Age. Tent camp. Dinner. Overnight in the tent.

Bus transfer to Nurata (65 km). Arrival in Nurata and visit the local mosque, pond with sacred fish, ancient fortress and traditional embroidery house. Lunch – kebabs in a Chaihana (Tea house). After lunch, cycling to a yurt camp near Lake Aydarkul (70 km). Stay for one night in the middle of the desert steppe. Dinner. Enjoy the evening near the fire under bright stars listening to songs of Kazakh musician. Overnight in a yurt.

Note: Yurt camp consists of 14 yurts, 4-6 people can spend the night in one yurt. The yurt has all the bedding.

Bus transfer to Kyzylcha (80 km). Bike ride through the Boykaro mountain pass (1016 m) and local villages (60 km). Lunch in a Chaihana on the way. Arrival in Josh. We transfer to the bus and continue to Mitan (75km). Accommodation in a guest house. A walk in the village. Dinner and overnight at the guesthouse.

Bike ride to Dahbed (50 km). Lunch in a Chaihana on the way. Arrival in Dahbed. Transfer to bus and transfer to Samarkand (15 km). After lunch, arrive in Samarkand. Accommodation, dinner and overnight stay in the hotel.

City tour with a guide. Once, Samarkand was the glorious capital of the Timurid Empire. You will see Ulugbek Observatory (15th century), Afrosiab Museum and necropolis of Shahi Zinda (13th-15th century), famous Registan Square (Ulugbek madrasah 15th century, Sherdor and Tila Kori 17th century). Lunch. Wine tasting in the evening. Dinner at a restaurant. Overnight at hotel of Samarkand.

Morning excursion in Samarkand. Free time in the afternoon. Transfer to the railway station at 16:00, at 17:00 departure to Tashkent by high-speed train. Arrival in Tashkent at 19:10. Transfer to the hotel. Accommodation. Farewell dinner. Overnight at the hotel.

Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to the airport for international flight home.

  • Entrance tickets to the museums and sights.
  • Meals in the cities, except lunch in Samarkand on Day 8.

  • Number of participants – from 2 to 15 people.
  • For a group of more than 14 people 1 person (tour leader) will be offered free accommodation in a twin room, food, transport and entrance tickets.
  • The program may be changed according to your preferences.
  • The cost of the tour will vary depending on the number of guests and the selected transport (car, minibus, bus).
  • The cost of the tour can be paid by bank transfer, credit card or other means agreed upon in advance when ordering the tour.

Level 2

50-70 km of cycling per day. No particular technical difficulties except the altitude difference. Most of the time you will ride a bike on the roads, bike paths, shared lanes and some secondary roads.

Luggage

Your luggage will be transported by bus. You will receive your luggage at the hotel. You can take a small bag or backpack during the bike tour.

Be aware that mutton is an important part of the local gastronomy and is often prepared in the form of small skewers (shashliks), kebabs and ravioli. We find some flavors of the Middle East and even the Mediterranean and the influences are Chinese, Russian, Persian, Oriental, etc.

Water

Mineral water for bike days included (3 L per person per day) is provided. For other days, you will easily find bottled mineral water in the shops and restaurants in the cities.

To conduct these bike tours, our company has purchased and can provide convenient, modern, highway – hybrid bikes of the GIANT brand, which allows participants to easily move on the mountain slopes and steppes. In addition, we will provide comfortable transport for technical support escort. It is important to note that preparatory work was carried out on these tours, everything was fine-tuned to small details and routes were chosen that run through the most picturesque places rich in historical and natural monuments.

 

CYCLING RULES

 

Everyone who has solid cycling skills can participate in the bike tour.

Each participant in the cycle tour must be familiar with the rules of the road and comply with their requirements.

Move in one row as close as possible to the right edge of the roadway;

Observe the interval between cycling riders of at least 2-3 meters (at descents – 10-20 meters);

Do not move forward of the guide and not to leave without the warning of the leader;

Bike tours are not advised for people with circulatory insufficiency, a person can’t go to a bike tour if he drank too much alcohol the day before.

The list of things necessary for travel will depend on the season, length of the trip and personal preference. Below we give some items we recommended to take with you:
